Unlearning Oppression/Alliance Building Workshop
Sunday, April 27 4:00 -7:00 pm
Tempe Friends Meeting
Facilitated by: Beth Blue Swadener, Kathryn Manuelito, &
Cristian Aquino-Sterling, Arizona State University
The "Unlearning Oppression" workshop is an experiential workshop that examines systems of oppression including racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, xenophobia, linguicism, and other "isms." The intersections and parallels between multiple forms of oppression are defined and challenged. The process is conducted in a safe and supportive environment that focuses on the personal as well as institutional levels of oppression. Participants gain practical skills in working with diversity issues through individual and group structured experiences and role-plays. The assumptions and many of the activities were derived from experiences the facilitators gleaned from working with multi-racial alliances for social justice in several contexts.
Facilitated by a multicultural team who view it as a tool for promoting social change, the workshop deals with myths and misinformation and includes a discussion of assumptions, definitions, and stereotypes. Participants learn strategies for unlearning oppression and techniques for interrupting oppression. The workshop culminates in exercises intended to strengthen multi-cultural alliances in the work place and community. The facilitators have over 10 years experience and have done this workshop in over 200 diverse settings. The workshop is introductory and may be followed up with other workshops addressing "internalized oppression" and "strengthening alliances."
The April 27 workshop will explore how to make local peace and justice organizations more inclusive and sensitive to the dynamics of oppression and the possibilities for stronger alliance building.
The workshop is free and sponsored by the Arizona Alliance for Peace Justice. For more info please email info@azpeace.org
